About Reading

Reading is a large town in the ceremonial county of Berkshire, England. It was an important centre in the medieval period, as the site of Reading Abbey, a monastery with strong royal connections. The first evidence for Reading as a settlement dates from the 8th century. By 1525, Reading was the largest town in Berkshire. Reading has several museums, every year Reading hosts the Reading Festival, which has been running since 1971. The festival takes place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend and is the largest of its kind in the UK aside from the Glastonbury Festival. Reading holds a number of other festivals. Reading is an important commercial centre in the Thames Valley and Southern England, it is also only 40 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Reading

The Jewish population of Reading has been around since the late 19th century, the peak in terms of numbers was in the post WWII years between 1948 and 1990, the highest recorded was 650 in 1965, and although the population has reduced more recently it is still around 400. There are three synagogues two orthodox and one liberal. Food will have to be bought elsewhere, London is only just over an hour away, food can be ordered through the Reading Hebrew Congregation.
