About Reading
Reading is a large town in the ceremonial county of Berkshire, England. It was an important centre in the medieval period, as the site of Reading Abbey, a monastery with strong royal connections. The first evidence for Reading as a settlement dates from the 8th century. By 1525, Reading was the largest town in Berkshire. Reading has several museums, every year Reading hosts the Reading Festival, which has been running since 1971. The festival takes place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend and is the largest of its kind in the UK aside from the Glastonbury Festival. Reading holds a number of other festivals. Reading is an important commercial centre in the Thames Valley and Southern England, it is also only 40 minutes from Heathrow airport.
