About Taipei

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a modern metropolis with Japanese colonial lanes, busy shopping streets and contemporary buildings. The skyline is crowned by the 509m-tall, bamboo-shaped Taipei 101 skyscraper, with upscale shops at the bottom and a rapid elevator to an observatory near the top. Taipei is also known for its lively street-food scene and many night markets, including expansive Shilin market. The city proper is home to an estimated population of 1,693,671 in 2009. Tourism is a major part of Taipei's economy. In 2013, over 6.3 million overseas visitors visited Taipei, making the city the 15th most visited globally. There are museums and art galleries, shops and places of interest. There are also some beautiful buildings including Taipei 101 which for six years was the tallest building in the world.

Taipei has a Chabad which provides synagogue services and kosher food to the 400 or so Jewish population plus visitors. This is based to the south of the city centre near the University. Food can be ordered with 14 hours notice and can be delivered for between $5 and $10.

JOFY, or "Jewish Observant Friendly" Establishments are lodging establishments offering special services for Jewish Observant guests such as Shabbat meals, accommodation on lower floors and regular keys for the rooms. It can also be a NON KOSHER establishment located in walking distance from the local Shul, community or kosher restaurants area.
