About Kishinev

Chișinău is the capital of Eastern Europe's Republic of Moldova. Amid blocks of Soviet-style architecture are landmarks including the neoclassical Nativity Cathedral. The dome-topped church anchors Chișinău's Cathedral Park, a plaza with a Triumphal arch celebrating Russia's 19th-century victory over the Ottoman Empire. Ștefan cel Mare Central Park is named for a Moldovan prince who resisted Ottoman rule. According to the preliminary results of the 2014 census, the municipality of Chișinău is home to 491,894 residents.

By 1774, Kishinev was home to 540 Jews, representing 7 percent of the town’s population. A burial society was founded in 1774 with 144 members. During the nineteenth century, the Jewish population rose from a small percentage to almost half of the city’s inhabitants. In the 1910s, 77 synagogues and prayer halls functioned. After the war, the Jewish population numbered 5,500. Survivors who had lived in smaller towns before the war and returned from evacuation in eastern areas of the USSR resettled in Kishinev. By 1959 there were 41,934 Jews in the city. Of the 4,000 Jews that live in Moldova these days most live in Kishinev. The Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Moldova (AJOCM) is the primary umbrella for the Jewish community; Lubavitch have a synague and centre in Kishinev.
