About Malaga

Málaga is a port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, known for its high-rise hotels and resorts jutting up from yellow-sand beaches. But looming over that modern skyline are the city’s 1 massive hilltop citadels, the Alcazaba and ruined Gibralfaro, remnants of Moorish rule, along with a soaring Renaissance cathedral, nicknamed La Manquita ("one-armed woman") because one of its towers was curiously left unbuilt. The climate is a subtropical-Mediterranean climate with very mild winters and hot summers. The Holy Week celebration, the August Málaga Fair (Feria de Málaga) and the Málaga Film Festival are the three major events held in the city.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Malaga

A popular tourist spot on the Mediterranean, Malaga has a population of 1,100 Jews out of 600,000 residents. The Jewish community (primarily Sephardi) is represented by its synagogue and the Jewish Association. Malaga was settled by the Phoenicians more than 3,000 years ago. They gave the city its name, calling it MALACA, which means "salting," because they used the harbor for salting fish. The community was revived in the early 1960's by Jews from North Africa. Malaga is currently the site of one of the five permanent offices of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain. The Federation is affiliated with the World Jewish Congress. Malaga has a synagogue, with a Rabbi and a day school. Kosher meat is available.
