Passaic is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 69,781. Located north of Newark on the Passaic River, it was first settled in 1678 by Dutch traders, as Acquackanonk Township. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. Passaic has a humid subtropical climate.
Passaic has a sizable Orthodox Jewish community that reaches into neighboring Clifton, with 10 Orthodox synagogues serving a Jewish population of 11,000 that is predominantly Orthodox. Southwest Passaic (known as Passaic Park) is a residential and institutional center of Orthodox Judaism, with 15-30 minyanim on Shabbos, and 1,300 families, making it one of the state's fastest-growing Orthodox communities. Home to numerous yeshivas, schools and other institutions, there are also many kosher food and shopping establishments.
