About Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is an independent city located on the southeastern coast of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. It is a resort city with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels, and restaurants along its oceanfront. Every year the city hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships as well as the North American Sand Soccer Championship. Near the point where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Cape Henry was the site of the first landing of the English colonists, who eventually settled in Jamestown, on April 26, 1607. Winters are cool and snowfall is light. Summers are hot and humid.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Virginia Beach

Nathan and Blanche Polis, who owned a furniture business in Norfolk, bought a house in Virginia Beach. Observant Jews, they would hold daily minyans in their Virginia Beach house during the summers by the late 1940s. By 1949, these Shabbat gathering were attracting between 60 and 75 people, more than the Polis house could hold. In the summer of 1949, a group of 21 men established Temple Emanuel, and set about to acquire land for a synagogue. With about 30 families at the time of the dedication, Temple Emanuel reflected a partnership between summer residents of Virginia Beach and the small but growing year-round population. Today the synagogues membership has shrunk to about 180 families from a high in the 1960s.
