Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Maine

Maine's Jewish community has a rich history dating back over 200 years. Early Jewish settlers arrived in cities like Bangor and Portland as early as the 1840s and 1880s, contributing significantly to the cultural fabric of the state. Today, the Jewish community is predominantly found in Southern Maine, York and Cumberland counties, as well as in Bangor and Portland.

The Maine Jewish Museum is located in a beautifully restored turn-of-the-century shul in Portland, the Etz Chaim Synagogue, the Maine Jewish Museum celebrates the art, history, and culture of the state's Jewish community. While there are no kosher restaurants in Maine, many supermarkets carry kosher products, and some even have dedicated kosher sections. From May through October, the Shore Path Cottage, a kosher B&B, is open in Bar Harbor, near Acadia National Park. The Chabad centers in both Bangor and Portland offer daily minyan and Shabbat services, providing a spiritual home and sense of community for those observing Jewish traditions.

JOFY, or "Jewish Observant Friendly" Establishments are lodging establishments offering special services for Jewish Observant guests such as Shabbat meals, accommodation on lower floors and regular keys for the rooms. It can also be a NON KOSHER establishment located in walking distance from the local Shul, community or kosher restaurants area.
