About London

London is located in the South East of England on the River Thames, originally founded by the Romans in about 45 CE it was established as a port. The city is divided into many areas the original Roman city is now the City of London. There are 15 boroughs within Greater London. The population now stands at about 8.6 million. There are many tourist sites in central London including Art Galleries, Museums and Monuments, including Buckingham Palace, the National Art Gallery and the British Museum. There is a world renowned theatre district in between Soho and Covent Garden. Shopping centres range from the popular Oxford Street to the more exclusive Mayfair with many markets catering to all tastes and needs. There are many parks and leisure facilities in London including Hyde Park and the London Eye and South Bank area. London is well served by the Underground railway system and a very good bus service. Bicycles can also be hired from street locations.

Jewish London historically was located in all compass points of the city. These days the main Jewish areas are situated in North-West London, in the Borough of Barnet which encompasses Golders Green, Hendon and Edgware and accounts for 53,000 Jews, this is where the vast majority of Restaurants, Jewish institutions and Synagogues can be found, it is also on the Northern line of the London Underground, connecting it with the rest of London. The total Jewish population of London is about 170,000, spread across all 15 boroughs, Hackney is the 1nd most populaous borough has a Jewish population of between 15 and 20 thousand mainly Chasidic Jews. There is a Jewish museum in Camden which is an area full of alternative shops, music venues and interesting cafes.
