A Legacy of History & Tradition
The Jewish presence in Jamaica dates back to the early 17th century when Sephardic Jews fleeing the Inquisition arrived from Spain and Portugal. They played a key role in the island’s economy, particularly in the sugar and rum trade. By the late 1600s, they had established one of the first synagogues in the Western Hemisphere. Over time, the Jewish population grew and diversified, with Ashkenazi Jews arriving in the 19th century.
Today, the Jewish community in Jamaica is small but vibrant. The Shaare Shalom Synagogue in Kingston, founded in 1904, serves as the centre of Jewish life on the island, holding regular services, holidays, and community events. Despite its size, the community remains active. The Jewish legacy continues to be an integral part of Jamaica’s multicultural fabric.
Villa Paradiso is owned by the Alberga family, one of Jamaica’s most established Jewish families. With deep roots dating back to the 17th century, the Alberga family has been instrumental in preserving the rich heritage of the Jewish community in Jamaica. Anthony Alberga, alongside his late sister Dr. Marilyn Delavante, ז״ל, authored The Island of One People: An Account of the History of the Jews of Jamaica, and played a key role in founding the Hillel Academy, one of the island's most respected schools.
