The Location:
San Gimignano is a charming Tuscan village with ancient Etruscan roots, perched on a hill 420 meters (about 1,380 feet) above sea level. It’s just a short drive from the well-known towns of Colle Val d'Elsa and Volterra.
The village has maintained its medieval character, with narrow cobblestone streets and a layout that dates back to the Middle Ages. The main street is pedestrian-friendly, while two smaller side streets were historically used for livestock. Connecting these streets are winding alleys that add to the village's timeless charm. San Gimignano has also preserved its medieval walls, which feature two towers designed by Francesco di Giorgio, as well as two primary gates: Porta ai Frati and Porta al Rivellino. Near the latter gate stands the "Rocca Sienese," a fortress built in 1352 that now houses the local municipal offices. Along the main street, you’ll find the Palazzo Pretorio, a historic building, and the Archaeological Museum, which showcases an impressive collection of local Etruscan artifacts, paintings, jewelry, and sacred relics.
Nestled in the heart of Tuscany and conveniently close to the highway that connects Florence and Siena, San Gimignano is the perfect base for exploring some of Italy’s most famous cultural and tourist destinations. All are within an hour’s drive or less: Florence (60 km / 37 miles), Siena (35 km / 22 miles), Pisa (65 km / 40 miles), San Gimignano itself, Volterra (20 km / 12 miles), Livorno (70 km / 43 miles), and more. In about an hour, you can also reach the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea coastline and several water parks, making it an ideal location for both relaxation and adventure.
Evenings and Events:
On many evenings, you can take part in events and shows held in the village or nearby towns (such as concerts and more). A bus service will be available for guests (for an additional fee), and day trips with transportation will be organized in the evenings when there are special events in the surrounding villages.
If you happen to be there on August 16th, don’t miss the world-famous "Palio di Siena" !!! It’s an unforgettable experience!
