About Larnaca
Larnaca is a city on the southern coast of Cyprus and the capital of the eponymous district. It is the third-largest city in the country, after Nicosia and Limassol, with an urban population of 84,591. The former city-kingdom of Kition was originally established in the 13th century BCE. The climate produces cool winters with an average temperature of 11oC and moderate rainfall and Hot dry summers with an average of 15 to 17oC. The most important of the festivals in Larnaca is Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood, celebrated in early summer with a series of cultural events. The festival used to last for about a week, but, in recent years, with the increased commercialism of peripheral stalls, rides and temporary loukmades restaurants, the festival been has extended to about three weeks, during which the seafront is closed to traffic in the evenings. Loukmades is a sweet delicacy.
