About Tucson

Tucson is a city in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert surrounded by multiple mountain ranges, including the Santa Catalinas. Reflecting its 19th-century beginnings are the restored mansions of its El Presidio Historic District and the adobe row houses of Barrio Historico. Home to the University of Arizona, Tuscon has many student-friendly vintage shops, nightclubs and restaurants on Fourth Avenue near the campus. The 2010 United States Census put the population at 510,116. Tucson has several large festivals which take place during the summer months. The city has more than 110 parks, including Reid Park Zoo. There are five public golf courses located in Tucson.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Tucson

The 2005 Jewish population is estimated at somewhere around 15,000 (exclusive of about 3,000 university students and untold numbers of winter visitors). Although the city has been part of the USA since 1854 there weren’t many Jews amongst the earlier populations. Of those settlers who were Jewish none had remained into the 10th century. A community survey taken in 2001 revealed that fewer than half of all Tucson Jews participate in Jewish activities. There are thought to be between 11,500 and 30,000 people of Jewish descent currently in Tucson. There are approaching 10 synagogues in Tucson with the largest number being located to the north of the city in Rillito and River Road Estates. Another area where there are synagogues is on the east of the city in Duffy. There is a kosher café at the JCC and a deli on 5th Street.
