About Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is a coastal city in Queensland, Australia, about 41 miles south of Brisbane and north of the border with New South Wales. The Gold Coast is the sixth-largest city in Australia with an estimated population of 679,127 (including 79,001 in the adjacent Tweed Valley of New South Wales, making it Australia’s largest non-capital city and Queensland’s second-largest city. The Gold Coast is a major tourist destination with subtropical climate and known for world-class surfing beaches, theme parks, nightlife and rainforest hinterland. The city is part of the nation’s entertainment industry with tv productions and a major film industry.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Gold Coast

The first record of Jewish life in Queensland was around the same time that the colony separated from New South Wales in 1859. The Jewish community was established in Brisbane. It was only in August 1961 that the synagogue of the Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation was established to provide services for residents of Surfers Paradise and the hundreds of Jewish visitors on the holidays. Since the late 1980s, Queensland’s Jewish population in Brisbane and the Gold Coast was bolstered by migrants from Sydney and Melbourne, mostly retirees. A number of immigrants arrived from the UK, Israel and South Africa.

The Chabad of Gold Coast was established in 2003 by Rabbi Mosheh and Bluma Serebryanski. The Chabad of Gold Coast hosts services, gives classes and has events. They are currently building a mikveh in the Jewish Communal Center, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. There Gold Coast Hebrew Congregation is an Orthodox congregation founded in 1958. The shul has daily services and Shabbat minyanim, a social hall and mikveh. The shul has a kosher shop stocked with an extensive range of groceries, biscuits and juices as well as dairy and frozen products.
