About Krivoy Rog

Kryvyi Rih or Krivoi Rog (Crooked Horn) is a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine; it is the 8th most populous city in the country. It lies within a large urban area, administratively incorporated with Kryvyi Rih Municipality as a city of region significance. It also serves as the administrative center of the district although it is not part of it. The city extends for 126 km from north to south. Standing on the Saksahan and Inhulets river, Kryvyi Rih has been a major settlement for most of its history, going back to its founding as a postal city in 1775 by the Cossacks. The climate generates warm summers and cold winters with relatively low precipitation. Snowfalls are not common in the city, due to the urban warming effect. However, districts that surround the city receive more snow and roads leading out of the city can be closed due to snow.

The first Jews settled in Krivoy Rog in the mid-1860s. Most of them were merchants or craftsmen. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th the Jews of Krivoy Rog suffered several pogroms. In 1939 12,745 Jews lived in Krivoy Rog, comprising about 6 per cent of the total population. At the end of August 1941 the Germans murdered several hundred Krivoy Rog Jews and,on October 14-15, 1941, they murdered about 7,000 more Jews near the city. Krivoy Rog was liberated by the Red Army on February 24, 1944. There is a Chabad House in Krivoy Rog.
